AutoComplete doesn't work

I recently got a new PC at work (WinXP Pro/SP2) and found that turning on
AutoComplete in the Internet Options of IE has no effect whatsoever. The PC
came preconfigured from our IT people, but they say that their customization
shouldn't affect AutoComplete. Anyway, they can't make it work either. I
googled through the web, but none of the remedies found out there had any
effect.

Thanks.

What does not work: When filling in forms, drop-down box with suggested
entries does not appear.

Actually, in my setup two items ("AutoComplete In File Dialog" and
"AutoSuggest") do not appear in the registry. Putting them in by hand has no
effect.

Protected Storage service is running.

I noticed that when I create another account, everything works fine for that
account (even though the same two items that are missing in y registry are
also missing in that registry). So something seems to be missing in the
setup of my default account.

Thanks.

Actually, I've tried that already. Even though this might work in principle,
I gave up when I encountered some (presumably unrelated) problems copying
and accessing some files with the new profile. Given enough time, I might
get this done, but I don't have that now and I need those files.
(Interestingly, I found that I could only copy the profile when in safe
mode, even though WinXP Pro, as opposed to WinXP Home, is supposed to let
you do that in normal mode.)

As an addendum to what doesn't work: Outlook Express can only 'remember' the
password for my email account as long as it stays open, i.e., I can log in
several times automatically as long as I don't close OE. Closing and
reopening makes it forget the passwaord even though the item "remember
password" is checked (but grayed out and not accessible).

Thanks.

THANKS!

The procedure outlined in the first link,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290684 ,
actually worked to cure all problems. It seems that the permissions were not
set properly for using the Protected Storage System Service. Once I reset
the permissions according to the instructions (which, by the way, didn't
quite match the menu items on my system, but were close enough to take some
educated guesses) everything works now as intended, not just for OE, but
also for IE.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Not sure if that would directly relate to you, but let your IS/IT

have a look at the document and see if it would work in your

would not recommend you changing up registry settings and such if
it's
is a corporate pc, let's leave that to the IT department shall we.

I recently got a new PC at work (WinXP Pro/SP2) and found that
turning on
AutoComplete in the Internet Options of IE has no effect
whatsoever. The PC came preconfigured from our IT people, but they
say that their
customization shouldn't affect AutoComplete. Anyway, they can't
make it
work either. I googled through the web, but none of the remedies
found out there had any effect.

take some educated guesses

That's called troubleshooting. ;-)

Glad you got it figured out. Keep having fun.

THANKS!

The procedure outlined in the first link,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290684 ,
actually worked to cure all problems. It seems that the permissions were
not set properly for using the Protected Storage System Service. Once I
reset the permissions according to the instructions (which, by the way,
didn't quite match the menu items on my system, but were close enough to
take some educated guesses) everything works now as intended, not just
for OE, but also for IE.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Actually, I've tried that already. Even though this might work in
principle, I gave up when I encountered some (presumably unrelated)
problems copying and accessing some files with the new profile. Given
enough time, I might get this done, but I don't have that now and I need
those files. (Interestingly, I found that I could only copy the profile
when in safe mode, even though WinXP Pro, as opposed to WinXP Home, is
supposed to let you do that in normal mode.)

As an addendum to what doesn't work: Outlook Express can only 'remember'
the password for my email account as long as it stays open, i.e., I can
log in several times automatically as long as I don't close OE. Closing
and reopening makes it forget the passwaord even though the item
"remember
password" is checked (but grayed out and not accessible).

Thanks.

This may be worth a shot.

This MSKB article states that if creating a new user fixed the
problem...[[you can copy the profile from the damaged account to the
new user account that you created. To do this, follow these steps: ]]
AutoComplete Does Not Save Username and Password

RSABase.dll does *not* exists in XP. So don't waste your time on that
part.

What does not work: When filling in forms, drop-down box with
suggested entries does not appear.

Actually, in my setup two items ("AutoComplete In File Dialog" and
"AutoSuggest") do not appear in the registry. Putting them in by hand
has no effect.

Protected Storage service is running.

I noticed that when I create another account, everything works fine
for that account (even though the same two items that are missing in y
registry are also missing in that registry). So something seems to be
missing in the setup of my default account.

Thanks.
