Autocomplete addresses from contacts

This is not the same problem as autocomplete from recently used
addresses, this is for when you type someone's name from your
"contacts", to get Outlook to automatically complete the e-mail address.

So, for example, I have a John Doe in my contacts, I open an email
composition window, and start typing "joh..."

My previous version of Outlook (2000) used to then fill in the rest for
me as it recognised I had the name in my contacts.

But my 2003 install (of which i simply imported the old .pst file) isn't
doing this.

It autocomplete's when i've already previously typed in the name, but i
need it to autocomplete from the outset.

How please?

TIA

State more clearly what you are doing.
It is not clear whether you are talking about autocompletion or
autoresolution. The latter is not invoked while you are typing in the To:
field. It is only invoked when you tab out of the field or send the message.

And other products like Novell GroupWise do it beautifully WHILST you type.
They allow you to specify which address books to use. Clicking CRTL K, or
CHECK NAMES is a manual process. Also AUTOCOMPLETION uses another listing
to be maintained seperate from the address book. After so many generations
of OUTLOOK I would expect it to be better on this than the competition.
