Hi, I'm using win 2k with all updates.
I bought a second hand fujitsu 10.8Gb harddrive which is now connected
and used for music storage. When I bought it I checked it over with a
fujitsu diagnostic program that did a full and through check that took
20-30 mins, the drive passed with flying colours. Because system files
were present I re-formatted the drive from win 2k and no errors were
reported. I also used chkdsk from properties tab and that too showed no
errors.
However, I have 3 small children that have found unusual (& horrible)
ways of shutting the computer down!!!! This obvioulsy forces autochk to
cut in during boot up, this appears to immediatley stop and I get the
message that there is a 'bad sector' at a particular location on the
drive and that it cannot proceed. It also suggests the possibility that
my computer is not configured correctly but if i'm sure it is press
'enter' but if the computer is not set up correctly you may lose all
data on that drive. I exit all the options without doing anything. I
then noticed that my 10.8Gb drive actually only has 9.30Gb total space
showing in drive properties and it is definatley a 10.8Gb.
I don't know why autochk starts trying to scan the non booting drive
first but more to the point why is it that only autochk is reporting
errors and are there any solutions. Can I use fdisk or format from
command prompt? will this make any difference??? Is there anything to
re-configure or double check. I have been offered another drive as a
replacement but wanted to check all options before going down that
route.
Many Thanks
