I have many folders setup in Outlook (connects to an
Exchange server). When I set the autoarchive options and
click "Apply settings to all folders", it does not
propigate to all folders at all. Instead, i still need to
individually select each folder and change it from the
default of "do not archive" to "use defaults".

Also, in reading documentation online, it states that the
default behavior of a new folder is to inherit autoarchive
settings - yet when i create a new folder, it is by
defauly set to "do not archive". Please help!

Thanks in advance

Very clear description. Perhaps you can help me? As you stated,

This is precisely what I do. My "spam" folder is set to delete every
week, and my autoarchive into an archive .pst folder is also set for a
week. The problem is, it doesn't work.
When the archiving begins all is fine. Each folder's documents are
archived as set up. When the program gets to the spam folder it stops
and tells me that 'another folder with the same name exists'. Whether
or not a folder with the same name exists in my archive .pst should be
irrlevent, since I'm telling the program to delete all entries in the
folder that are over a week old.
I'm running Windows XP and Outlook XP.

I have the following auto-archive settings for my folders:

Inbox : never auto-archive
Deleted Items : permanently delete after 1 month
Drafts: permanently delete after 2 weeks
Junk: permanently delete after 3 days
Sent Items : move to archive .pst folder after 12 months

I set the global AutoArchive interval to run every 1 days (i.e., every
day). That way it covers all possible auto-archive settings in the
folders (since you cannot specify less than a day for items to become
eligible).

The problem that I run into with AutoArchive is that I may not leave
Outlook loaded AND idle long enough for it to start the AutoArchive
process. Bouncing in and out of Outlook to read and send e-mails
probably won't leave it idle long enough for AutoArchive to run.
Because of this, I've customized the toolbar to add an Archive button
(and then have to remember to autoarchive according to the folder
settings instead of the defaults) since I'll remember to do it manually
more often than I leave Outlook loaded long enough to get AutoArchive to
automatically run. It is pretty stupid that Microsoft never bothers to
tell you when the last AutoArchive run was executed, so you can never
verify that it actually ran (other than trying to detect any effect it
might've had if it did indeed execute).

If you are using Exchange, your company may have different e-mail
retention policies and these override your local AutoArchive settings
(when you are logged into their domain rather than loggin in locally).
