Hi all,

I have a windows XP Pro machine that will not allow me access to the
Automatic updates service. Even if I log on in safe mode as Administrator!!

If I try to access this service I get and "Error 5: Access is Denied"

The machine had various viruses on it which I have cleaned off, I tried
updating to service pack 2 but this just made it worse so uninstalled it
again.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Tried this Jim,

Had absolutely no effect!!

Need to get acces to the Autoupdate service but cannot workout how to access
the permissions for this. I understand that there is a way of changing it
through the local security policy....but cant see where

Hi Terry,

Try installing and running MS Antispyware, as I had a problem with spyware
and viruses, as every time I went to open msconfig or the taskmanager, it
would immediately close. This stopped happening after I let MS Antispyware
scan my harddrive and clean out additional threats that McAfee did not
detect. Let me know what the scan finds!

Hi

Reset the security settings on the Automatic Updates and BITS service
and see if it helps:

http://groups.google.co.uk/[email protected]

(the 'sc sdset ...' part in the link above)

Then, after the above, do the following:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
