I have an xp pro sp1 machine that's been up for a couple
of years and have never been able to get auto update to
work.
I've been doing the updates manually, even though the
auto update is set in My Computer/Change a
Setting/Performance and Maintenance/System/Automatic
Updates/Keep My Computer Up to Date/Download and Inform
me.
I found a Knowledge Base article on How to configure
Automatic Updates using Goup Policy(328010), so I thought
I'd give it a whirl.
After I completed the above, thats when I noticed in
Event Viewer, the following;
'The Background Intelligent Transfer Service depends on
the following nonexistent service: lanmanworkstation.'

I did a 'NET START WORKSTATION' and received 'The service
name is invalid'

I did an 'SC QUERY WORKSTATION' and received 'The
specified service does not exist as an installed service.'

How can a service disappear and how do I get it back??

I'm also getting a DCOM error relating to BITS.

I know this might be a complex issue, but I would still
like to get Auto Update to work.

Thanks

William

If you configured it to run by changing the registry as
per 328010,set system restore to go back before that
date,or change it back to original settings manually. Then
try using the ideas in article 306525....Good luck.

Hi Skip;

I used the Group Policy instructions in article 328010,
but I didn't do the Active Directory stuff; maybe I
should have??

Your suggestion of going back to a Restore point prior to
the Group Policy changes seemed like a good way to get
the Workstation service back, but it didn't work, it's
still missing from the Services listing, and the BITS
service won't start.

Under what circumstances does a service disappear and is
there a way to restore a missing service?

Thanks for your help.

William
