If I select "auto-update", what prevents any hacker from
entering anything he wants on my computer under the guise
of "updates"

Or hacked DNS server or Host File. no?
Can't trust anyone now a days. ;)

There is considerably more to the protection mechanisms than that. Do you
use WidowsUpdate or AutoUpdate? I am quite certain that this product takes
great care to be certain that the file it receives and installs is both the
same bytes sent by Microsoft, and actually from Microsoft. Code signing is
the mechanism that provides both assurances, I believe.

Nah - I know folks here who are candidates for this technology, but I don't
think this question qualifies. It's reasonable to want to know what steps
have been taken to avoid a trojan update. And it is reasonable for folks
not to trust Microsoft.

I think its unreasonable to think that Microsoft are complete fools, but
that's a personal bias.

Thanks for the education without the insult given by
others. I had the auto up-date on, I just wanted an idea
of how it works.
