Auto Update: all options greyed out/manual Update zilch

Apologies if these problems have been discussed here, I
couldn't find anything on them...

Can anyone provide some insights on why I can't set the
options for Automatic Update in the Control Panel? Or why
I can't even do a manual update through "Start->Windows
Update"? What happens: it displays the WU Screen and a
message saying that's its searching for the latest version
of Windows Update software, then nothing :) And the
alternatives on the left hand side of the screen for
choosing updates etc are also greyed out.
