When i create an auto text entry then exit and shut down
the PC, the auto text entry is not there when i next open
Word, Please help

Autotext is saved in normal.dot by default. You need to save that file when
prompted - ensure that prompt to save normal.dot is checked in tools >
options > save.

Graham thanks for the help,
but that still didnt work after the computer was shut down
for the night then turned back on. Will i need to
reinstall Word?

Is this a company PC on a network? It could be that the IT nazis cause a
default normal.dot template to overwrite your own. In which case apart from
railing at the laziness of the IT staff which is preventing Word from being
used correctly, you will have to put up with it. On reflection, there is a
potential workaround, but we'll address that if necessary later.

If it is a solo machine, then normal.dot is not being updated. The original
could be corrupt, so rename it and let's start again with a new one.

Reinstalling Word will have no effect on this problem whatsoever. The issue
is external to Word.

sorry it took so long to get back to you (holidays). Yes
this is a company PC on a network, and the "IT nazis" told
me that they do not touch the default settings on these
files.

Does that mean that they have frozen the default settings or that they don't
mess with your normal.dot? My guess is that they have frozen the default
settings and they do mess with your normal.dot.

I have been talking with the guys from the IT department
and have assured me that they do not touch, freeze or
change these type of documents.

Is your normal.dot template stored in a folder which is marked "read-only?"
Is normal.dot read-only? Neither of these should be the case. Word does not
behave the way you are describing unless someone is crippling it.

I have gone through with the guys from IT and have had a
look at all the files and folders where the normal.dot
lives and none of them are read-only. The auto-text
entries are still working every second or third day, this
is driving me mad!!

If you are running Norton AV, its Office Plug-in is both unnecessary and
causes all sorts of spurious problems. This could be another one of them?

See if it has an Office Plug-In. If it does, disable it.

Yes, for CE, here's Office MVP Beth Melton's boilerplate:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
