When I start to put a small text box in a word doc, I get a humongous text
box with dark corners and sides with a massage saying "Create your drawings
here". How can I disable this auto function?

From the Tools menu, select Options and go to the General tab and uncheck
the "automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes" box.

Thanks, Doug and Paul! Right on. I looked at the general tab, but just
didn't catch it at the bottom of the list. Boy do I feel dumb asking this
kind of question that I should know already.

Best regards,
Bill

Hi, Bill,

In Tools > Options > General, uncheck "Automatically create drawing
canvas when inserting AutoShapes". Although it isn't obvious, text
boxes are AutoShapes in the same class as the things you can insert
from the Drawing toolbar.

The dumb question is the one you don't ask.
