Auto Start Presentation

How do I make it so when someone double clicks on my
presentation file is automatically starts the slide
show? Thanks!

Just rename the file with a PPS extension in Windows Explorer.

Or open the PPT file and do a File/Save As -- select "PowerPoint Show (*.PPS) from the dropdown box at the bottom where it says, "As Type."

that would help me....thanks for the referral.

That would depend more on the content you have in mind, but as far as what
you've specified, it should work fairly well.

You can install either of two free PowerPoint viewers on the PCs and add your
presentation saved as a PPS (ppt show) to the Startup folder so it loads
automatically when Windows restarts.

With the presenation set to Kiosk mode, you control navigation; the only
keystroke it responds to is Esc. I think Shyam Pillai's No Escape app would
allow you to trap even Esc keystrokes (www.mvps.org/skp)

But if your shows are just images and music, that is, if you don't need navigation or true animation capabilities (just pans and things like that), then you might want to investigate Movie Maker. It's a free download available on the microsoft site.

periodical. I want to present shows of my photographs from the front windows
of local businesses. Eventually I might include advertising and monthly
changes....but for the test period I am just doing photos and type. It would
be nice if I could have just the photos change...not the type
everytime....but that isn't so important. I am just now looking into
this...I don't yet know what is possible so I don't have a punch list of
what I want.

You might want to explore products like Photo Album, Image Importer Wizard,
etc to make it easy for you to import pictures:

Hi, Gene,

I didn't mean to throw a monkey wrench into the works, honest!

You can download Windows Move Maker here. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx It's free. It works on Windows XP, but once you've rendered a movie, that movie should play on most versions of Windows.

Movie Maker would be a good option for showing images with background music. It lets you add some neat transitions and effects, too. It's pretty basic and easy to use, and it may be perfect for what you want. However, MM's text features are not powerful at all.

So I think your decision on which to use may lie in how much type you have. If you have a lot, you'll probably want to stick with PowerPoint. If there's not a lot, MM might be better.

I suspect if you download MM and play with it for half an hour, you'll be able to tell whether it will meet your needs or not.

If you decide to stick with PPT, I'd definitely try out those batch image import links Geetesh posted.

Gene, you could also try www.take-off.as/datapoint
With that addon you can dynamically link your pictures to powerpoint and by
using excel or a database you can specify which picture (or pictures) should
be displayed. Updated automatically without stopping your slide show.

As long as you have Windows 98 SE or higher, you can use the new PowerPoint
2003 Viewer.

PowerPoint 2003 by itself installs only on Windows 2000, XP and 2003 -
PowerPoint 2000 and 2002 will run well within Windows 98.
