Whenever Send/Receive launches--either manually or automatically--the first
message I receive appears to be generated by Outlook itself. It's blank,
with no From, To, Subj, or Body contents.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Charley,

Thank you for your post.

I have never heard Outlook would automatically send such kind of email each
time we perform Send/Receive. To narrow down this issue, I would like to
some information with you:

1. Let's start Outlook in safe mode and manually perform a send/receive,
will it send a blank email to yourself? (If the problem does not persists
in safe mode, please skip the following steps and let me know.)

- Click Start, and click Run.
- In the Open box, type: "outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks)
There is a space character between Outlook and the forward slash (/).
- Click OK.

2. Which version of Outlook are you using now? If it is 2000, please go to
Help->About Microsoft Outlook and tell me if it is in Internet Mail Only or
Cooperate workgroup mode.

3. Do you use a POP3 or Exchange email account in Outlook?

4. Which operating system are you using now? In case it may be related to
the third party software, let's start the computer in safe mode with
network and do not open any other programs including antivirus software,
start Outlook and check if the problem still persists.

With the above information, I will then be able to analyze this issue and
provide you with some suggestions. I appreciate your efforts in helping me
collect it.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I tried to respond privately, but your email address
won't accept messages. So here's the current state of
affairs, because you asked...

When I followed your instructions, Outlook asked me to
insert my CD in the computer. I can't do this because
Outlook was installed from the MSDN Subscription CD, a
subscription that I've since discountinued. That $2300
investment is now worthless because Microsoft won't
provide passwords for the disks that I paid for. So I had
to bomb out of the install process.

I then uninstalled Outlook XP and installed Outlook 2000.
But although everything seems to have worked
successfully, Outlook would no longer run on my computer.

Further, today I tried to install other software on the
computer, but I received a message that because another
installation was in progress I had to finish that
installation first. The only in-progress installation is
that %^&*()#% aborted Outlook XP installation.

Further, Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer won't
launch after I reboot. The only way to coax them open is
to launch Excel and several other Office programs, then
to try opening the Explorers. If I cross my fingers just
right, the two Explorer programs will eventually launch.
Sometimes, not always.

So, when I posted my original question, Outlook was
merely generating one blank message each time I
downloaded email. But now, I have a computer that won't
run Outlook, won't let me install any more software, and
will only grudgingly launch the Explorer programs.

Thanks for all your help.

Charley

Hi Charley,

Thanks for your detailed information and I understand your frustration.

IMPORTANT: Since there are several problem with the computer, it seems this
computer is a bit unstable now. In the current situation, it is strongly
recommended to well backup all important data to another computer or
storage media firstly.

Analysis
=======

For the original Outlook issue (i.e. it automatically created a blank email
during send/receive), it is possible some Outlook cache file or add-in is
corrupt. Outlook safe mode will not load the cache file and add-in. That's
the main reason I suggested you check if the issue would occur in safe mode
previously.

When we run Outlook safe mode, it will try to repair some possible corrupt
Outlook cache file, therefore it requires us to insert the original Outlook
setup CD. I understand you do not have access to the original MSDN CD for
installing Outlook XP and have removed Outlook XP and installed Outlook
2000 now.

I know you cannot start Outlook 2000, Windows Explorer and IE, nor can you
install any software on the computer. I will try my best to help you on
this issue. While if we could resolve the Outlook issue but the IE/Explorer
issue still persists, we need to do some system level troubleshooting
steps. In such a case, you may want to get help from the Windows newsgroup
as they will be better to address system related issue.

As there are several problems with the computer now, it may take us some
times to troubleshoot the issue. Your understanding is appreciated.

Further information collection
=======================

Before going any further, I want to confirm some points with you to better
learn the computer's current situation:

1. What is your operating system? Have you ever used system backup feature
to create a system backup point?

2. After you installed Outlook 2000 and start it, what error message you
receive? Would you please give me a screen shot of it?

To make a screen shot:
-----------------------
a. Press the PrintScreen key on the keyboard at the right of the key F12.
b. Open Microsoft Word and press Ctrl+V.
c. Click File (menu) -> Save to save the file and send it to me. (You can
post it to this newsgroup or email it to (e-mail address removed) directly.)

3. Please click the Mail icon in Control Panel and give me a screen shot of
the problem screen. This will tell us the mode of your Outlook 2000.

4. Open Add/remove programs in Control Panel, please also give me a screen
shot of the programs listed in it. If we cannot see all programs on one
screen, please scroll the vertical bar to show the installed programs and
capture two screen shots.

5. I also want to confirm if your Word and Excel programs are 2002 or 2000.

6. If we start the computer in safe mode (press F8 when starting the
computer) and do not open any other program, can we open the Windows
Explorer system program? If not, please give me a screen of the error you
received.

With the above information, I will then be able to analyze this issue and
provide you with some suggestions. I appreciate your efforts in helping me
collect it.

I spent several hundred dollars last night for a very
good technician to work more than three hours trying to
fix the problem with the Registry.

He thought he had it fixed because he was able to get one
program to install. He then started the Windows update
that would have kept this problem from happening. It went
very slowly. So he left and I went to bed.

This morning, the Windows Update was hung with the
progress bar at 100%. When I canceled installation I got
a screen that says Please wait while the current
installation continues. It's been that way for 15
minutes. I have the feeling that it would stay like that
forever.

Don't you folks have a untility that can clean up my
registry from a failed installation?

Please copy my email address with any response.

Hi Charley,

Thanks for your update.

Based on your information, I understand the computer will hang up when you
try to install update on the Windows Update web site. Windows Update is not
related with the Office programs. This may occur under one of the following
scenarios:

1. Some system registry or system file is corrupt. (i.e. there is some
problem with the current Windows operating system.)
2. The Windows installer component itself is corrupt. (Note: Windows
installer is a system component which will be used to install software on
the computer.)
3. The Windows Update web site is unstable at that time or there is some
problem with the connection between your computer and our Windows update
web site.

If Windows installer installed the Office related registry incorrectly, we
do have a utility called "Windows installer clean up utility" which can
clean up Office related registry on your system. If the Office related
registry is incorrect, we will encounter problem when using the Office
program and will not have problem to update Windows or install other
software on the system.

Since we cannot install other programs (it is fixed by the technician based
on your information) and there is some problem with the system update now,
I mainly suspect the Windows installer component or the current operating
system may be damaged.

The microsoft.public.outlook.general newsgroup is primarily for issues
involving the Outlook program only and I am specially trained for Outlook
tech support.

Since the Windows Update issue is specific to a Windows system level
problem, you will be best served by posting this problem to one of the
following newsgroup according to your operating system. They will be better
to help you restore the possible corrupt system registry/files to repair
the system.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsme.general
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion
microsoft.public.win2000.general

The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most
qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the newsgroups
regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction
with us.

Meanwhile, if we still have problem to use the Outlook program currently,
please feel free to let me know and I am glad to help you further on the
Outlook issue.

Thanks for your kindly understanding. Wish you all the best!

won't accept messages.

Charley
