auto-size navigation buttons to coincide with text length

Hope you can help -

Is it possible to assign a parent button and different child button to a
theme (I've only seen the option to enter a single option) and how do I
ensure the 'button/bar' auto-sizes with the text?

The site will need publishing on a SharePoint site at some stage so not sure
if that limits possible solutions.
