Auto-shutdown doesn't work

This one has me puzzled.
I have a Pentium with XP-Pro & a GA-6VXC7-4X (Socket 370 Processor) MOBO.
When I shut down, it closes and powers off completely.

I've just upgraded my sister's PC from W98 to XP. It has the same MOBO, same
version BIOS as mine and always powered right off in W98, the only
difference is it's a Celeron.
Now, if I shut down the new XP, it comes up with the 'It's now safe to shut
down Windows' screen and I have to power off manually - also, the Standby
option is greyed out.
Nothing's changed, because if I plug the old drive with W98 on it, it powers
down fine still.

What am I missing?

Hi John,

Control Panel/Power Options, you may need to enable APM - it is not enabled
by default.

On the standby issue, that is nearly always caused by a noncompliant driver.
If it was previously working, you may need to rollback one that was recently
updated. If it never was, then you likely need to update one or more of
them.

Thanks, Rick, enabling APM fixed the shutdown.
Strangely enough, that tab does not appear on my PC, that's probably why I
hadn't picked it up.

I shall now delve into the driver bit for the other problem.
