Auto Scan Sometimes?

Automatic scanning set to Daily, Quick Scan. Most days it does not scan. I
can see in Event Viewer, System, when it runs (I used View Filter, Event
Source set to WinDefend). On this computer, it ran on 3/3/2006, 3/1/2006,
2/24/2006, 2/22/2006. Other days, it did not run, although the computer was
on. I've trying uninstalling and reinstalling, but it still skips more days
than it runs. Any fix for this bug?

I have the same problem, except it does not ever run a scheduled scan even if
I set up Tasks to run it. Has anybody any ideas as to why this should be.

I have found that if automatic scanning is enabled but a scan is missed WD
will do a scan 20 minutes after the first logon or switch on 48 hours after
the previous scan - so the 22nd and 24th and the 1st and 3rd would bear this
out. Other scans must have taken place between the 24th and 1st.

Thanks for the info! So Windows Defender scans every two days, if you set the
schedule for daily? When I look at events, I see that it also ran on the 26th
(I must have missed that before), and I ran it manually later in the day on
the 28th, when I noticed it had not run for several days. I'll try not
touching it, and see if it runs every other day. Based on what you are
saying, it should run today (the 5th), since it skipped yesterday.

Oh, and

Well, one of my two computers scanned today. The other one didn't. Any ideas
why the second computer has now skipped scanning for two days, even though it
was on during the time it was supposed to scan, and there is an MP Scheduled
Task in the Scheduled Tasks list?

But remember it only seems to do it after your first logon after 48 hours
have passed. If you go through a scheduled time it will do it then, I
suppose. Do keep the group informed of your findings.

Hmmm! Haven't a clue, but I will do some tests on mine. Maybe someone out
there can give us some clues?

Auntie Kate

I don't have any more clues than the rest of you. The only machines I've
looked closely at in this regard have been servers--and they've been
scanning like clockwork.

Bill Sanderson pointed out in another thread that a Task Scheduler might not
be active:

"If you go to Advanced, and the scheduler is active, the top item should
read
"Stop using the task scheduler."

If it is not active, I believe it reads "Start using the task scheduler." "

Do you think that was the problem on your second machine?

Auntie Kate

My scheduler is active. Top item reads "Stop using the task scheduler". My
second computer (which was displaying a yellow icon in the notification area
because it was 3 days since the prior scan), ran a scan at 9:26 PM yesterday
(3/6/06). The auto scan is set to daily at 9 PM, so I don't know why it
choose to run the scan later. The prior scan was at 9 PM on 3/3/06. My other
computer scanned on 3/3/06 and 3/5/06, both at 9 PM (but it skipped 3/4/06
and 3/6/06).

I feel that both computers are getting scanned often enough, so I'm not
going to worry too much about this. Before using this product, I used Spybot
S&D with manual scan, and I didn't scan every day. But I do think Microsoft
should fix this auto scan prior to releasing Windows Defender.
