My company recently upgraded my system to XP and Excel
2002. Now I find I no longer have auto-save as an add-
in. This is a feature I have long relied upon. What
happened and how is it replaced?

Hi Jim!

You might also try Jan Karel Pieterse's free AutoSafe addin which is
much better than the old AutoSave:

You can get it from the Excel MVP page hosted by Stephen Bullen at:

Jan's AUTOSAFE.xla is akin to the XP Autorecovery. It does not function the
same as the the old Autosave did.

Quoted from a posting by Jan.........

My Autosafe does NOT save your work as Excel's Autosave does. It makes
*backup copies* of your work in progress. It DOES keep track of where
a backup file's original comes from so it knows where to restore it
to, should you experience a crash (which is what Excel's Autosave does
NOT do).

You still have to save your work yourself, but should Excel crash,
Autosafe will prompt you to restore the last backup copies it has kept
for you. It will also check whether the master version (original) is
more recent than the backup copy and warn you if that is the case.

End quote............

The AUTOSAVE.XLA from earlier versions of Excel works fine on XP version. If
you can obtain a copy that is.

Hi Gord!

Thanks for that. Looks like one tip before an upgrade is to save that
AutoSave.xla file from the earlier version. I run additional versions
rather than substitute but I suspect that if you elect to do a
replacement, you'll lose the AutoSave.xla.

Looks like three options for 2002:
AutoSave using the old AutoSave.xls
Using 2002 Tools > Options > Save Recovery feature
AutoSafe from Jan

Now to work out the parameters for deciding on which to use :)
