Hi,
I have found this group to be very helpful and I am hoping
someone can help me.

I have an not quite newer Compaq (pre HP) that just re-
boots itself for what seems to be no reason.

When it comes back it does say it has recovered from a
serious error, but just says that a driver is bad, without
saying which driver.

I have tried re-installing Windows XP Pro, but this does
not solve the problem.

Does someone have a suggestion on why it is happening, if
not a driver, and how to determine which driver is bad, so
I can then do something about it?

Thanks

There is a handy tool for that in your administrative tools in the control
panel. It is called the "event Viewer". When this happens again then go into
the event viewer. When you open it there will be three logs listed on the
left. The two that you want will be "System" and "Applications". Open one or
the other first and look for any red X that corresponds to the time of your
lockup. Double clicking the red X will open it's details window. Now most of
this will seem like a foreign language to you but there should be a reference
to the application or module that caused the issue. Look in both logs. If
there is way to much in them then right click on the log in the left panel
and then choose "clear the log" and when it asks if you want to save the
entries just click no. Now you have a clean log and you will be able to find
the red X easier the next time it happens. Even if you can't understand what
to do next you can post the information window back here and we can be of
more help. An excellent program that is free and will help you identify all
your systems components is Everest Home Edition from www.lavalys.com In there
you will find some links to get the latest updated drivers from the
manufacturer of the software\hardware. {]:~)
