Auto Number Not Working

I have a database we have used for 3 years--all of a
sudden it will not assign a new number. It is pulling an
old one and then indicates it is a duplicate value. I
have it maked as Yes (no duplicates) with long integer.
Can anyone help? Thanks

Let me make a guess -- you have Access 2000 and have not installed the
latest service pack. There is a known bug in Access 2000 that can cause
Autonumber fields to do this after you compact the database.

I would shy away from doing that, since that may be the cause of the
problem.

Yes....I am running 2000. But I also have SR - 3. Is
