Auto Logon to network

I setup a Win2000 server network as a Workgroup (no domain) with
simple file and printer sharing. Have a few folders shared and
restricted to different Users. Setup Users with passwords and think
that somewhere setup network to require Users to logon with passwords.

Workstations are WinXP and require users to logon to windows with
passwords. When access to network is needed then another logon window
appears to logon to network.

Would like a way to automatically logon to network with windows
user name and password to avoid this second logon.

All suggestions will be appreciated.

You have two choices - either you can establish a domain configuration where
all accounts are stored on the domain controllers, or you will have to go to
each server and establish accounts whose names and passwords match the names
and passwords used to log onto the computers that are accessing the shared
resources.

I thought that I have done the latter. I have each workstation with a
unique ID and password to logon to XP and matching user accounts
on the one Win 2000 server. I have three folders setup as share with
one user able to access all folders and other users only able to
access one folder that matches their ID.

I remember that on workstations that were Win98 that you can go to
networking and change the logon from "Client for MS Networks" to
"Windows to Windows Family" logon and this would work to eliminate the
second screen to logon to network. Is their a way to setup a script
on the workstation that will auto-logon to the network using the ID
and Password or the Windows logon. If possible a generic script that
will use the ID and password from the user that is currently logged
on.
Detail instructions will be greatly appreciated.

If the account names and passwords match across the workgroup you should not
see a prompt for a name and password when you connect to a network
resource - it should just happen. If you see the prompt that means that
either (1) The account does not exist on the "server"; or (2) The account
exists but has a different password on the "server" than the "guest"; or (3)
That the share rights on the "server" are not correctly configured.

Thanks for the info.
To help understand I took an older computer and installed Win2000
Server and setup as suggested and all is fine. I went back to my
original Win2000 computer and still having the problem. Noticed this
computer has Win2000 Pro installed. Would this be causing the
difference and if so is their a solution.

I'm still not 100% sure you've solved the base problem - and no, the
difference between a stand-alone Windows 2000 Server installation and a
Windows 2000 Professional installation should make no difference.

Are you, in fact, using a user name and password that exist on the "server"
(whichever computer has the folders you're trying to access over the
network) and are used to log onto the "client" (the PC that's trying to
connect to the shared resources)? It isn't enough if they have the same
name but different passwords, or that they're both in the Administrator
group - they must both have the same name and password exactly.

Thanks again for your patience. I am ready to give up on this problem
and just live with having to logon. The only difference I can see
between the Win2000 Server (Server) and the Win2000 Pro (pcbk433) is
the Computer Name and the "Users must enter a user name and password
to use this computer, checked." Uncheck this and it makes no
difference. Available in Pro version only. The Server seems to work
fine and the Pro will ask for the network logon.
Workstation will access files on the Server so that I only have to
backup the Server to secure the updated files in those shared folders.

PROBLEM: Workstation view "My Network Places" and "View Network
Places" and double click on "Pcbk433" pops up windows to "Connect to
Pcbk433" and then I enter: User Name: Ken and Password: ken and now
will logon to Sever(Pcbk433) and can access folder "My Documents" and
access folder "Ken" and deny access to folder "Rich".
This is what is expected but would like to eliminate this second logon
to network.

The computers are setup as follows:

Win2000 Pro setup as Server.
Computer Name - pcbk433
Workgroup = WORKGROUP
Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer,
checked. (unchecked makes no difference)
User Accounts:
Administrator PW = (blank) Group = Administrator
Ken PW = ken Group = Administrator
Rich PW = rich Group = Power Users
Sharing folders:
My Documents = Share this folder, checked
Share Name = My Documents
Permissions = Everyone
Allow = All checked

Ken = Share this folder, checked
Share Name = Ken
Permissions = Ken (pcbk433\Ken)
Allow = Read checked

Rich = Share this folder, checked
Share Name = Rich
Permissions = Rich (pcbk433\Rich)
Allow = Read checked

Sharing Printers: Epson Stylus 800
Share as: Epson800

Epson Stylus C60
Not Shared

WinXP Pro setup as workstation.
Computer Name - cel466-
Workgroup = WORKGROUP

User Accounts:
Administrator PW = (blank) Group = Administrator

Ken PW = ken Group = Administrator
Rich PW = rich Group = Limited User
Guest PW = (blank) Guest account is off

Sharing and Security folders:
Download = Local Sharing and Security, unchecked
Network Sharing and Security, checked
Share Name = Download
Allow Network users to chamge my files, unchecked

Sharring Printers: Canon BJC-4550
Do not share this printer, checked

Thanks again for all your help..... Rich

Hi

Richard is exactly right in what he says, you will not experience this issue if the user account /password on the machine you are connecting from exists on the one you are connecting to because you would just have to supply EXACTLY the same credentials as you have to logon to the machine you are connecting from which is not normal behavoiur in the workgroup environment

if you actually check you will find that you do not have the same accounts on all machines I have had this same issue back in the old days before i set up a domain and its always an account issue, now if you cant aceess shares thats a different story but just to logon to the machine same user/pass on both will do the trick

to test create a user called test with the password test on your client and server and test it, you will find it works

Regards

Simon

The only other suggestion I have at this point (since it looks like it
SHOULD be working at this point) would be to un-share then re-share a folder
and make sure the appropriate access rights have been granted.
