auto launching app with scanner button or camera connection

I am unable to get my scanner software to start automatically when I push the
Start buttton on my scanner. If I put a check mark in the box "always use
this program for this action" after I select the appropriate scanning
software from the choices, the next time I push the scanning button, nothing
happens. I then must go into My Computer, R. click on the scanner and choose
Properties, click the Events tab and put the check back in the "prompt for
which program to run" choice. Then when I push my scanner start button, I
will again get the window to choose the application I want to launch (Epson
scanning software). I select it and it will open but I cannot put a check in
the "always open.... box or the button won't work at all. This same scenario
is true for my Canon A80 camera as well. The camera is recognized by the
computer but I cannot auto launch the appropriate camera software I want
automatically by putting a check in the "always use this program... " box. I
must again select it from the choices. Epson told me that the 1 touch
scanning buttons are controlled by Windows XP and since it is happening with
my camera as well, it is a problem with XP. Does anyone have any solution
ideas?

I have the latest Epson Scanner driver and updating the Canon camera driver
didn't make any difference. I believe it is some setting in Windows XP. I
had an older HP scanner 4100 before I purchased this Epson scanner and the
autolaunch button worked on it (I didn't get the choices window; it just
launched the appropriate program I chose because I had a check in the "always
start... box). I have since uninstalled the software but that didn't help
and the software applications (HP Precision Scan LT and HP ScanJet Copy
Utility) still show up in the choices to launch by pushing the scanner
button. I don't know where to go to remove them.
Thanks for the suggestions

Might try updating your scanner software. Epson an updated software utility with a
September 2004 timestamp. A driver is also available with a June 2004 timestamp,
maybe newer than yours.

Canon has WIA drivers, could be the answer too
