So, IIRC, even turning on the autoformat options in PPT 2003 won't make your
pictures insert into a predefined layout -- you have to use the placeholder
thing as I described.
Seems that if you first select the placeholder THEN do Insert, Picture, From File, it sizes the
picture to fit the placeholder, though it appears to look first at the picture's "natural" size
and only after that at the placeholder size.
That is, if the picture is naturally smaller than the PH, it gets dropped into the PH at
whatever size it normally comes in at, and centered in the PH. It doesn't get enlarged to FILL
the PH.
If the picture's larger than the PH, then it gets shrunk to fit.
