I upgraded from office 2000 to 2003. I am working on my college project and I can not get the auto formatting to work when inserting clip art. It is checked in the auto formatting check box. And I tried re-installing and still no luck. Any ideas?

What type of auto-formatting are you looking for?

If you use a slide with a "content" layout, you'll get autoformatting.
Simply click the icon inside the content placeholder to insert the object
you want. It will then take on the size and location of that placeholder. Of
course, you'll want the clipart icon.

I am trying to get it to auto format a clip art picture when I use the insert clip art from drawing toolbar. But it doesn't autoformat the the text when the clip art is inserted. The clipart shows up over top the text. It is supposed to automatically chage the layout of the slide and show the auto format icon, but it won't do it. I know about the other way that echo has told me, we have to do both ways but I can't get the auto formatting to work. Any ideas?

This behavior was changed in PPT 2003, my guess is because of the number of
support calls and questions here about "Why does my slide text move around
when I insert a picture or clipart?"

So, IIRC, even turning on the autoformat options in PPT 2003 won't make your
pictures insert into a predefined layout -- you have to use the placeholder
thing as I described.

Seems that if you first select the placeholder THEN do Insert, Picture, From File, it sizes the
picture to fit the placeholder, though it appears to look first at the picture's "natural" size
and only after that at the placeholder size.

That is, if the picture is naturally smaller than the PH, it gets dropped into the PH at
whatever size it normally comes in at, and centered in the PH. It doesn't get enlarged to FILL
the PH.

If the picture's larger than the PH, then it gets shrunk to fit.

Have I utterly mystified you yet or should I babble on for a few more pages?

Nope, that was very interesting. I learned something. Thanks for babbling!
