I have noticed that my system has AUTOMATICALLY downloaded pictures from the
internet for my music folders. This is a bit scary if you ask me. I have
foders with album names, or artist names, and they have the CORRECT
thumbnail pictures set for them, and I didn't do it!

Does anyone else know about this? Is there a way to disable this? And where
are these images stored?

I'm sure somewhere it's considered a feature to have XP customize itself in
response to the content on my hard drive, but I don't like it. So much for
privacy.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is a harmless feature built into Windows Media
player. Every time your media player for music cds, it
goes out to a database and pulls down information about
the cd. It's not spyware. Enjoy the feature.

Check your Media Library settings in Media Player. If you allow it to go
online to find album, artist and track info - it will pick up the album
pictures too.

I guess I'm just suspicious by nature. I have Media Player 9, only I don't
use it to rip or play any of my CD's. I do have the option to add file
information for media files created by another program.

However, I found this explanation in Media Player Help:
(These "changes" are not implied in the Options dialog)

Changes made to files when media information is updated
When you copy tracks from audio CDs or when you copy other types of music
files to Media Library, the Player automatically obtains related media
information if the Update my music files (WMA and MP3 files) by retrieving
missing media information from the Internet check box is selected and your
computer is connected to the Internet.

You can also manually add and edit media information.

Media information is stored in both the files and the Media Library
database.

When the Player automatically retrieves media information, it may make the
following changes to your files:

a.. By default, missing media information is appended to any existing
media information in your audio files.
b.. Media information is added to the files in the form of tags. For
example, the Player may add the following tag to an audio file: <artist
name=Beethoven>.

a.. ****Album art is added to files and music folders in your My Music
folder. ***

a.. The date modified is changed when media information is edited or
obtained.
In addition, if the Rename and rearrange music using media information check
box is selected, changes to media information in your files may cause the
files to be moved to another location in Media Library and to another
location in the folder to which the files were copied.

Thanks, I found it. The Media Player help file explained it better than the
settings option did.

Do you know where these files are stored locally?

Hi there,

Here is your situation, when you installed Media Player 9, you chose t
allow Media player to access the internet and allow automatic medi
information updates for files. Turn this off by opening media playe
and going into tools/ Options / Media Library tab and uncheck "Updat
my files...." this should stop the download of the extra's...

Hope this works.
