I recently installed a new system and hard drive in my pc and all is fine
except that i cant get autofill to work . Its ticked in internet properties
but my passwords and user names for eg just arent remembered . any solutions ?

also

my favorites wont collapse as before , i have to search through all the
files and url's stored rather than the most frequently used ones being shown
and the others hidden

many thanks

As for your second problem - in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced
tab, Browsing section, check the box by "Enable Personalized Favorites
Menu", click Apply, click Okay. It will take some time for IE to get this
feature working, depending on your browsing habits over time. More info:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257045/en-us

Now for your first issue. Make sure you have it set up correctly:

How to use the AutoComplete feature in Internet Explorer 5 and 6
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/217148/en-us

Autcomplete for UN/PWs are stored in the registry -

Deleting the DWORD AskUser in the right hand pane may help if all else
fails - it should cause IE to ask if you want to save passwords.

AutoComplete, User Names and Passwords on Forms (delete the 'askuser' DWORD
to force IE to ask if you want to save passwords).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms

i have read through the MS page on auto fill . the password save query
window pops up ok but the entry isnt saved for a website username and
password for eg . All the autofill boxes are ticked too and were been already
.. any further ideas before i do something redical ?
thanks
Steve

Jon

i have looked up the first link but i am not clear as to whether i should be
enabling or disabling and i'd rather not choose the wrong thing ! the
instructions appear to be saying that disabling password caching stops the
retention but maybe i am reading it wrong ??

on the second link i went to delete the S followed by a long number ( the
whole thing appears on the left not right ) under "proptected storage
provider" but it wont be deleted . in the resolution following this
instruction , MS say to go to the "security menu" but where is this ? I sign
in as the adminitrator by the way .

Finally you say make sure that the "protected storage service " should be
disabled but i dont know what this is ?

many thanks for your continued help

steve

I pointed to the KB re the disabling of password caching in IE so you could
see if it was in effect on your system, and if so, to undo it.

You can see if the Protected Storage service is running at
Start...Settings...Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Services. It
should not be disabled, and it's Startup Type should be "Automatic".

jon

i have disabled the password caching and its had no positive effect should i
now enable it but if so how do i do this ?

the protected storage is running as you stated and is automatic .

please note that whenever i stick in a password windows is asking me whether
i want to be remembered and i am obviously ticking yes and then it doesnt
remember it when i return .

can you suggest something else ?

thanks steve

jon or anyone else ?

can you suggest something else at all here as the problem still exists from
my last post and i havent heard back from you .

thanks again

Delete this Registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Intelliforms\SPW

Thanks for this Frank

Jon Kennedy in his post of the 7/8 suggested to disable password caching
which i followed , as this had no effect is this worth reversing ?

Hi Steve,
As for your inability to delete the user subkey of
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider]
Right-click the user subkey (the one like
S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701) and choose "Permissions"
[From http://www.creativebusinessmedia.com/pdfs/password forgotten.pdf ]

* Then ensure that Read and Full Control permissions are both set to Allow.
* Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently logged
on is selected, that Full Control is
listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in
the Apply to column.
* Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with
entries shown here that apply
to child objects check box.
* Click Apply, and then click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue.
* Click OK, and then click OK

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi,
You may already be doing it this way, but... try starting up in safe mode
315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222

Double-check this step:
* Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently logged
on is selected

You might try creating a new user account, to see if that account will save
passwords. If autocomplete works in a new user account, it shouldn't take
that long to move your data and settings over.
