"Auto Detect Settings" taking a long time on some clients

We run a proxy.pac file which location gets issued to users via DHCP option
252. All of our clients run XP SP2 and IE6 and the DHCP and IIS servers are
running 2003 R2. NB: WE DON'T RUN ISA

The proxy.pac file is fairly basic, where it matches the clients IP and
directs it to the proxy servers. We have 400 clients.

It has been running for 18 months without any issues until recently.

Some clients (maybe 10) have started getting 30-60 second delays when
starting IE with "Detecting proxy settings". Eventually it works fine and we
can see the users browsing session on Webmarshal.

Does anyone know why all of a sudden we have started to get these delays?

I have a similar problem just loading ie6 in w2000 it takes an age. after
loading say BBC news it all works at speed until a new url is requested.
Another post suggests Java update might be the culprit. But it only recently
happened. Is it to do with Feb monthly update?

I have just uninstalled Java 6 from my PC and IE now responds normally as
before. So I guess the fault needs to be reported to Sun Java people and not
Microsoft
