How can I get IE (or OE for that matter) to connect just by opening the
respective application. Thought I had it that way once, but seem to have
lost that feature somehow.

Hi Dave :-)

Are you getting any error messages? What is the wording? Did you install
any programs or updates at the time the problem started?

Also.. download the following to a floppy from another machine if you can't
download from the affected machine, then copy, install and run them on the
problem machine and see if that helps with the connection:

LSPFix
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

and….

If not..then your may have scumware causing the problem. Follow the steps
here to fully clean your system:

First., download and install BHODemon from
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
Your problem may be caused by a bad BHO.

If this does not resolve the problem, the do the following. Even if you have
already run any of these programs, run them again according to the
instructions here:

Most importantly, be sure to run CWShredder here

Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.

Then visit these two sites to test for parasites and help basic cleaning:
