It was possible in Outlook 2000 to have it automatically
use the username that was logged onto the operating system
when it was opened. Does anyone know how to accomplish
this same task in Outlook XP?

tools, accounts, change email accounts... More Settings and look on the
Security tab. You're probably set to None for authentication.

I clicked on Tools, then Email Accounts, then View or
change email accounts, then change (with Microsoft
Exchange Server highlighted) then More Settings. There is
no Security tab available.

Jim,

The "None" option is on the Advanced tab under "logon network security"

Hope this helps.

Jim,

Thanks for the update.

Can you provide more details on your exact scenario? Do you have multiple
people using the same computer and you want to make it easier for them to
log into the machine and then launch Outlook (which should auto-configure
their MAPI profile)? If this is a correct assessment then the way to achieve
this is to install Outlook on the machine using a transform that includes
all the necessary profile settings. For the mailbox name you would use
%username% so the profile gets created using the user's logon name. Since
you already have Outlook installed on the box your best long-term solution
will probably be to uninstall Office and then do a new install using the
transform.

You hit the nail on the head. This is a medical center and it is possible that one of these machines may be at a nurses station or in an ICU where there could be in excess of a hundred people utilizing the PC. We also create a master hard drive to clone for the purpose of mass installs as new areas open up or for rapid reconfiguring of a corrupted PC, so having this option available to us in an environment with 5000+ users is exceptionally helpful to our help desk who would be responding to all of the calls to assist the user with setting up their outlook. I am not sure however what you mean by installing with a transform. I have no problem with reinstalling to software if that gets us to where we need to be. Do you have any instructions about setting up this transform? When I went into the control panel and opened up the mail icon and went into the exchange server settings I did try to put in %username% in the username field then copy over the ntuser.dat file, but it did not work in the way you mentioned, probably because it was not done in conjunction with a reinstallation. Please feel free to contact me via email if this would be easier for communication at (e-mail address removed)

Jim,

It sounds like you want to have Office installed with a transform that
contains the generic Outlook profile information. That way, any user who
logs onto the machine and starts Outlook will have their profile
auto-generated for them (assuming their domain account name matches their
mailbox name).

So, the place to start for Office XP (and any other version) is the Office
Resource Kit http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork. More specifically, the
Outlook profile information is on
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/four/outc02.htm.

Then:

1. Please read through all of the above information and then download
install the resource kit tools from
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/appndx/appa04.htm. The CIW is part of
the core tools.
2. In the CIW specify a "New" Outlook profile
3. Enter your Exchange server name and keep the mailbox name at %username%
4. For additional accounts specify the Outlook Address Book at a minimum.
5. Save your transform
6. Uninstall Office XP on one <Test> machine.
7. Install Office XP with the transform.
8. Log in as a user and launch Outlook -- does the profile get auto-created?
If so, have that user log out and then have another user log in and try the
same thing.

Thanks,
