When I clear everything using Auto complete - It seems to
clear everyhitng with the exception of certain things???
If I can't clear past web addresses using autocomplete -
what other way can I use? Can I use DOS?

Hi j :-)

Be sure to turn off AutoComplete. Then try the following and see if it
helps:

How to clear Address Bar History (Search)

See here
http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/issues/ch000511.htm

See this section: Instructions for Internet Explorer users
http://www.help2go.com/article58.html

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm
Deletes the History folder (and the index.dat file). When you reboot, a new
folder is created

Delete History folder manually:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

In order to prevent the Autocomplete from working, close all open browser
windows or it will not take effect. Go to Tools | Internet Options | Click
the Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web
Addresses and all other items you don't want used with Autocomplete.
CAUTION: Be careful clearing passwords, be sure you have them backedup

Do a Deltree command in DOS:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Follow the instructions to the letter. You will be left with new Index.dat
file of 32 KB, and a newly created History folder. The same will apply if
you go the distance and do a Deltree on TIF and Cookie folders. It is
unnecessary to do that if they are in good working order.

Tip: If you type URLs in via File> Open, instead of the address bar, they
aren't saved in the TypedURLs key and you can keep a select few URLs in the

To delete ALL Addresses in the Drop Down list, go here and download and
install Mike Burgess' DelTypedURL.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
See below for Selective Delete.

You can also get DelSearchMRU.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelSearchMRU.inf

Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete. To remove
hidden AutoComplete entries in History:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#AutoComplete

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure that ALL instances of IE6 are CLOSED before you do
the install of this(these) .inf files.

A nice alternative just for selective or all Address (not Search) history
maintenance is EditURLs, here:
http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/
Here also, you must close ALL instances of IE6 for the deletions to "take".

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Thx,

when I go to one of your recommended sites for help:

This is what it states:
Unable to delete AutoComplete entries

When you are unable to delete the AutoComplete entries
after selecting: Clear Forms
Internet Options | Content [tab] | AutoComplete [button]
| Clear Forms [button]

Use the above method to delete the History folder as the
AutoComplete entries are actually stored in the hidden
History\index.dat file. [more info] (also applies to IE 6)

The problem is this - If this method doesn't work
completly in that the odd web address is still there,
what other method can I use to erase it?
