Is there a way to make Active Directory auto-complete a
newly added user's log-in name when assigning the first
and last name. NT4.0 did this while allowing you to
specify either first initial+last name or vice-versa.
Thanks for the help!

Do you mean when you create the name in AD, that it will autocreate the
display name and their logon name, such as firstname.lastname?

I am thinking that David wants to know if is possible for a "Joe, Smith"
user to have a "JoeS" or "JSmith " options login user name...

No. There is no way to make Active Directory Users and Computers
auto-populate the "User logon name" (userPrincipalName -UPN) or the "User
logon name (pre-Windows 2000)" (samAccountName). The "first name",
"initials", and "last name" can be used to auto-populate the "Full name" (CN
and displayName attributes) but no the logon names. When typing the "User
logon name" the "User logong name (pre-Windows 2000)" will be
auto-populated. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;250455 and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;277717 for more
information.

David,

I think that you are asking is there a way once I enter in
a name in the "First Name" field and then enter in a name
in the "Last Name" field will the "user logonname" field
be created from this?

If that is your question then I do not think that it can
be done. Maybe you can script something to accomplish
this but I do not know.

If you want the "Full Name" field to be in a certain way (
such as "Lastname, Firstname" or simply "Firstname
Lastname" ) based on the two aforementioned fields then
there is definitely a way to do this. Also, pleae
remember that this is the Display Name and affects how the
users show up in the GAL ( assuming that you would be
using Exchange and Outlook... ).

To set it up so that all accounts that will be created
from this point forward show up "your way" please follow
the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;250455

For the user accounts that have already been created that
do not meet this requirement please consider using either
LDIFDE to change the "displayName" attribute -OR- consider
using the really neat tool ADModify, which can be found at
the following ftp site:

20Tools/ADModify/

Cary
