I have, as the help file suggests, re compiled the contacts cache but
entering a contact nickname still will not bring up the associated email
address.

The contacts folder is set as the Email Address Book

Whether or not it is pertininent I have also tried exporting the contacts
file, and on doing so have found that the nickname data is not exported
(tried in Excel and Access formats)

What do you mean by a Contact nickname?
Autocompletion has nothing to do with your Contacts data.

When you create a contact, on the "Details" tab, there is a field to enter a
nickname for the contact. In Outlook 2000 when composing an email this field
was also checked for a match from your contacts.

Outlook has never used the nickname field for autoresolution except in IMO
mode, and that was discontinued years ago.

I know. That article has nothing to do with the nickname field. As I said,
the nickname field is not used in either autoresolution or autocompletion.

Russ,
By now it should be clear to you that there is a vast knowledge gap out here
in user-land as to what (if anything) the Nickname field in a Contact record
is actually used for, and whether it is in any way related to the nicknames
auto-assigned to each contact by Outlook and stored in the .nk2 file.

There appears to be no help or description of this field in Outlook help,
and none available online other than the page referenced by Mr Tiede earlier.

I also used to use nicknames as an e-mail address shortcut in previous
versions, and can't seem to do that now. And I don't even know what an IMO
version is, and I can't believe that all my incarnations of Outlook were IMO
without my knowing it.

Besides, if Nicknames are not intended to offer an address shortcut, what
the *&^%$#@ are they for?

this is the help topic that results from a search for the word "nickname"
using the help feature within Outlook 2003.

As I mentioned in my first post I have tried the solution it offers but to
no avail.

The Nickname field has no connection to the autocompletion cache. It is
simply a field in which to store the nickname of a person in case you can't
remember it or want to use a more familiar name in a mail merge, for
example.
It is also a dysfunctional field. It does not survive an export of your
data.

Read my other post. Then write to me at a sales account at the domain.
I'll send you a document which will provide you with more information about
this.
