auto calculations

My excell work book has stopped doing calculations after
I hit "enter". Now I have to hit the save button before I
can see the results of the calculations. is this a
feature that I have some how toggeled on or off? or is
there something else that I have missed?

Check calculation mode

It's probably set to "Manual / "Recalculate before save"
due to an earlier file opened in the Excel session with this Manual setting

Click Tools > Options > Calculation tab
Check "Automatic" > OK

The first excel file opened in an Excel session will determine the setting
for the session, ie until you exit Excel. Suppose you double-click in
Explorer & open file1.xls (say, saved with "Manual" calc setting), then
later on, in the same Excel session (i.e. without exiting Excel) you proceed
to open file2.xls ("Auto" calc setting), the calculation setting will be
"Manual".
