I just bought a new Dell. The first time online, it auto-updated with
a 20 meg download.

Did this also register my copy of XP? How does that process work?

Product activation is not required on a Dell computer
with Windows XP preinstalled. The license is tied
directly to that specific Dell computer which prevents
activation on any other computer.

Since Dell is 100% responsible for Windows XP support,
you only have to register with Dell and not Microsoft.

I am thinking the download is from MS and that sounds about right for the
total size (aggragate) for all the recently released critical/security
updates that came after Service Pack 2, which is already on your new Dell.

No, it did not register, and registration is totally vonluntary. If you are
thinking about "activation" (many confuse thw two), then you don't need to
do that since your system is locked to that XP install you have by Dell, and
doesn't need activation at all (unless perhaps you make a hradware change
that may trigger activation).
 
A license is not prevention for activation on other PCs, and I don't know
why you have to point this out; is it some MS cop thing feeling you have to
let others know about their duty to MS..

He also doesn't need to register with Dell, since he bought it from Dell,
the service tag/code is already tied to that purchaser, which had to give
payment and shipping info to Dell to get the PC.

Funny thing though, though (as you say) Dell , which in this case is
responsible for XP support, and you say should be registered with Dell, one
gets the opportunity to register with MS when they first turn on their Dell
PC for the first time.
