The authentication appears to time out on a number of
client machines. The client machines are windows 98 and
windows XP. The server is Windows advanced server 2000.
Initally at login, the computer operate properly, they are
able to access their mapped drives and browse the server
as expected. However, after about 30 minutes, they lose
the ability to view mapped drives and browse the server.
The error message is "access is denied" when attempting to
access their mapped drive. Connectivity is still fine, in
that I can still ping the server from the client machines.
I loaded the AD client onto the windows 98 machines, this
did not help.
According to the computer management console, the client
machine is in an active session, even though the client
machine is unable to access the server.

I had a similar problem where network shares would work
fine for a while and then i was not able to access the
files, open them, edit them and in some casses i would get
a access denied.
Run a diagnostic utill on on the hard drives of your
server.
I had a ibm and ran a ibm util and discovered that i had
bad sectors and a faulty smart on the drive.
