My MS Windows Mail program has stopped receiving and sending mail. No
changes have been made to my operating system or computer. The error
message (number 0x800CCC18) states: "ERR - An authentication mechanism MUST
be entered."

I am not able to access anything in "Help" to define what an "authentication
mechanism" is or how what needs to be entered to resolve this issue. Can
anyone help!

That's not the complete error message.
Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Thanks for your reply and so sorry for my delay in replying. I have been
using regular charter.net internet access for my email. Had been OK but now
I need quick access to a saved email and the "login is temporarily
unavailable!"

So back to trying to resolve the Windows Mail "authentication" issue! Here
is the copy/paste error message:

Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop.charter.net', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR An authentication mechanism MUST be entered', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

(Thanks for teaching me how to do the right click to cut 'n paste!!!!)

FYI...since all the problems with this "authentication" issue I also had
difficulty logging in to the charter.net internet email access. With their
tech assist, that issue was resolved and my password was changed. I have
tried the new password with the Windows Mail program and I still get the same
error message copied above.

I would really like to be able to use my Windows Mail program! Thanks for
your help in trying to resolve this issue!

You are probably using an authentication feature the server does not support.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Make sure that "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is not enabled.
