Authentication in peer-to-peer networks

Hi

This may seem to be a very very simple question, but help would be
appreciated, thanks.

I have a network of many computers without any domain server. They are not
necessarily part of the same workgroup either. all machines are running
windows XP pro. what i would like to know is how do i get authentication
working between the machines? example: computer A wants to copy files off
computer B, he is able to see all the shared folders, but when computer A
attempts to explore a particular folder it will ask him for user name and
password. The hosting machine will decided permissions on a folder level...

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all W2K's and XP's.
