I've got an ASUS P4C800E-Dlx mainboard with onboard audio and a SPDIF
output. I'd like to know if it is possible to do on the fly encoding to 5.1
output (like in games) on the SPDIF with this mainboard.

Audio chip is an ADI AD1985 SoundMax with 6 channels.

A software encoder implies latency, and while the latency can be
managed for some content, for others the latency is unavoidable.
For things like desktop sounds, the delay of a software encoder
is annoying.

I did find this though. Another toy for your enjoyment...
