i use all mp3, on my laptop i network it and have pp file
as well as music file on laptop, music has to be found in
the pp on the laptop and then saved with the music into a
pp folder, the music is on both systems, because once it
is disconnected from desktop the music will not work( file
not found). The presentation was created on desktop then
networked to laptop. I have always done the same until
recently everything has worked. Previously if the music
would not work on desk top it was not used but now the pp
is created on destk top and worked only to find out that a
song may not work.

It sounds like you need to open the presentation in PowerPoint on the laptop,
delete the music files and then insert them from the folder on the laptop. If I
understand what you are doing, the music won't work by just moving it to the
laptop because the links are still pointing to the desktop.

thanks for responding, but that is what i have been doing
the music is networked as well and once the presentation
is on the laptop i need to click on music icon in the pp
and find the music in the folder on laptop and click on
yes to put that audio into that audio on that slide. My
concern is that i have sometimes 3 other audio that works
but 1 maynot. that same song works in the presentation on
desktop. Is there something that can be checked with the
media player or whatever pp uses? I didn't seem to have a
problem until sp2 was downloaded, i have now uninstalled
it thinking that was the problem but samething happening.

thanks again sonia for your help, what i have done is
converted that mp3 to wav. and then a put that into the
presentation and it worked. thanks for help (but now i
really wonder why that should of worked when for 3 years
of doing presentations i have always used mp3.) If you
have time for an explanation good and if not i appreciate
this site and all it's good info and quick responses.

To test one of the non-playing MP3s in the player that PowerPoint uses, go to
Start > Run and type mplay32.exe and open your MP3. Does it play?

yes this mp3 plays with this player.

.

Then it should play in PowerPoint. I think that your links are broken. What
version of PowerPoint are you using? Assuming that you are using PowerPoint
2000, can you right click on one of the MP3s and select "Edit Sound Object"?
The dialog that appears should show the path to the file. Is the path pointing
to your laptop?

As I understand, you have all of the MP3s in a folder with the presentation. If
PowerPoint is asking you to find the file, it means that it's not finding it in
the location that the link is pointing to. Are you sure that you *deleted* the
MP3s and then reinserted them using Insert > Movies and Sounds > Sound from
File? Then you need to locate the file in the folder on your laptop.

the music is networked
That's a definate no no.

Have your music on the local disk and the same folder as your presentation

iam using pp 2002. Yes every since i have started putting
presentations on laptop the audio has always asked me to
find it, but it has always worked this way. Maybe i am
not putting it correctly onto laptop. Networked, then pp
in file and within file i have a folder where the music
goes. Go to view pp and always right click to play music
and always have to find it in the folder on laptop. When
networking from desktop i copy and paste pp and audio on
to laptop. Is this not the correct way of doing this??
doesn't sound correct according to TAJ simmons
thanks again

Nothing should be accessed over the network. Copy the presentation and the
music files and move them to a *single* folder on the laptop. Do not put the
music files in a sub-folder. One folder for all the files. Then delete and
reinsert the music files to create correct links so that you don't have to tell
PowerPoint where they are when you play the presentation.
