audio volume/levels

I am making a slide show with mostly still photo's and background music.
However, I do have one short video clip I'd like to insert. I have done that
with no problem but I would like to be able to lower the volume of my
background music so that my video sound will stand out. But, I only want to
lower the background music during this one short clip and then I want it to
increase back up to where it was before. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

This is a copy of my earlier post to someone with the same requirement:

Hi Akkifriman

Sounds to me like you are trying to have the music louder in some parts
of your movie and movie louder in others?

If so it is possible but it has to be done manually.

Here is how I do it.

1st ensure both the movie and the sound are split where you want to
change the sound
[In timeline select the movie tack; move the cursor to where you want
to have the change; press the split button under the preview window
(second from the very right)]
[next select the audio/music track; mover the cursor to the same
timespot; press the split button]

2nd you can adjust the volume of the movie audio track and the music
track indepenently. In the section where you want the movie audio to be high
[right mouse click the movie audio track and slect volume - set it to high]
[right mouse click the music track and select volume - set it to low]

This can be done independently for each split section along the timeline.

You will need to experiment a bit to get it right and where I needed
fade in and out I split the movie into several parts and changed the
sound gradually across 5 increments (0.2 second lots for 1 second)

Its a bit tedious, but it works.

There are other products that manage sound variations along a movie
timeline better (eg Moviexone) and if you intend to do a lot of work
like this you may wish to consider them - of course they represent
another product to learn and have their own issues.

Hope this helps

Rob -

Thanks for your help but the audio/music timeline won't split. Just the
video track will split and, of course, the audio track that goes with the
video will split. However, the audio/music track on my timeline won't split.
It is an MP3 I imported from my music files.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

Never mind about my earlier post...you were exactly right! I wasn't
selecting the audio/music track before I tried to split. You helped me
immensely. I appreciate it very much. Your directions were just what I
needed.

Thanks so much.

Hello,
For a smooth transition from one sound level to another you should consider
running it through a program capable of achieving that. A program called
MovieXone will give you the ability to move the volume up or down at as
many points as you need. The result is a smooth transition between each of
those levels...there are no jumps from one setting to another.

MovieXone is free and can be obtained from this website

http://www.livedownloads.co.uk/search-v3.cgi?search=moviexone&order_by=field3&order=abc

for a small charge. I expect it can be obtained elsewhere if you dig for
it. Be warned though, after I had played around with it I ended up buying
its big brother MovieDV 6 from www.aist.de
