Audio Stutter

I have a problem with audio stutter when playing back downloaded or streamed
music and internet radio. Have Soundblaster Live 24bit soundcard. I've
reloaded its software and updated drivers. The problem started at the same
time that I lost the ability to restore my system to an earlier checkpoint.
Coincidence? I've tried disabling Soundmax which is also installed, but makes
no difference. Have McAfee VirusScan and Firewall running at all times.

I experience stuttering when using QuickTime (6, now 7), in a way that I
managed to resolve elsewhere by setting audio Hardware Acceleration to 0 (on
a notebook with RealTek AC'97 chip) or by using another driver model (MME,
WDM, ASIO).

It would be misleading to be more specific.
