audio shortening

Hi All. Does anyone know how i can shorten a song (one that is already in my
music files on pc)before i insert it in my WMM project. I already tried
clipping the song while already in the project. and it doesnt sound/blend
good enough. I was hopeing there is another way to do it before i even
import it into my collections. do you recommend a free program for this type
of editting? please let me know if so and thanx.
