Are any tools available that would allow rewinding an audio instead of
restarting the slide?

If you set it to play on mouse click you can click it again. Or you can set it
to play automatically and repeat twice. See the custom animation settings.

I think this only applies to PPT 2002 or later.
After inserting the sound file make sure it is set to
"start from the beginning" and it usually helps to have
"stop after 1 slide" clicked.
It's also easier if you don't have it play automatically.
Leave the speaker icon on the slide and put another symbol or
action button beneath it, e.g. <-- <--. which I'll call the rewind button.
Select the speaker icon and in custom animation, choose
sound actions, pause, under timing select triggers and make
sure the speaker icon is set as the trigger

Select the <-- or rewind button and choose
sound actions, play. under timing select triggers and make
sure the rewind button is set as the trigger.

So what happens is if you hit the rewind button
it plays from the beginning
if you hit the speaker icon, the sound stops, hit it again
and the sound starts from where it stopped.
Hit the buttons in any order and you'll get what you expect.

I am listening to lectures delivered on ppt. Some slides have 5-10 min
audio. I don't want to replay the entire slide, just rewind a few seconds
for a fact I missed.

I think this is taking you beyond what PPT can easily do.
My main suggestion is to make the sound files shorter or divide
them up, which you can do with
sound editors including "Sound Recorder" included on most systems.
Perhaps you could do something like a partial rewind by stringing together
several individual sound files, but I know it would be complex.
I'm interested in the context here, how the lectures are being used
(outside of the class) and recorded,
how they fit into the class, etc. -- since I am doing something similar with
my
lectures. If you want to fill me in on some of this please respond to
ekmanp at gsb.ceu.hu. (please make the appropriate change)
