I am looking for a way (or software) to record both
through my microphone and mixing background music from my
DVD player (in my computer). I have tried the Sound
Recorder in WinXP and it only captures the mic. I have
tries a couple of mixing software packages and they
capture either my voice or the CD, but I need one that
captures both.

you will need sound mixing software...there are many on the market. These allow you to mix up to 16 tracks together. For what you need it sounds like you could use one of the simpler ones...maybe only 4 tracks or 8...you can get them wherever they sell software. They are really quite easy to use and the benefits of using them is great. You can adjust volume, length...add effects, etc. You would need to record the voice and the background stuff separately. Then load them into the mixer and place them where you want them, then save them as a new audio file. It's not difficult at all.
