Audio recording query

Maybe a little OT but wasn't sure what the most appropriate group was...

Here's my query: I would like to record streaming audio (Realplayer) to
keep on my PC. I have a 3.5mm audio cable and was wondering if plugging
into the speaker and mic sockets on the soundcard(or my speakers which
also have these sockets) would send the audio 'back on itself' and allow
me to record what I want.

I haven't actually tried it because of a nagging suspicion that it might
somehow cause damage.

Responses very welcome!

Here's a list of software that will do what you want, some shareware,
some freeware: http://radio.about.com/cs/recordingstreams/index.htm

That might work if you have a full duplex sound card, but that would
be waay too much work :-)
I use Messer, it's a program that works just like a VCR for the sound
on your computer. It will record what ever goes though the sound
card's mixer to wav, or mp3 on the fly (not sure if it will do ogg).
The developer is no longer working on it, but I find it is a very
stable program, even on WinXP. I use it all the time to record
streaming radio to mp3's which are burnt to CD/RW's and played on my
car's mp3 player during long trips.
Check it out at:

You may also have to download and install the Lame_enc.dll for mp3
support if it is not allready on you system. The link and instructions
is on the Messer's web site.
