I have had the problem reported by some here that when
playing the timeline, sometimes the audio doesn't for 5 to
20 seconds after the start of the video, if it starts at
all. In fact, if I saved a project, I could successfully
play the timeline once, immediately after opening the
project, but attempts to rewind the timeline and play it
again would result in delayed audio start, or no audio at
all.

Looking through the notes on papajohn.org, I saw reports
about audio playback difficulties associated with WinDVD
version 4, which came preinstalled on my Dell notebook.
The reported symptoms were different than mine
(e.g. "chipmunk sounds", clipping sounds), but the fix is
the same -- I uninstalled WinDVD and my problem is
solved. I have not yet tried installing WinDVD version 5
which reportedly resolves the underlying issue(s).

Hi there,

You will need to ensure that the codecs registered for version 4 have in
fact been removed and de-registered.

I confirmed that the WinDVD 4 uninstall had indeed removed
its codecs, then I installed WinDVD 5. I am happy to
report that with WinDVD 5 installed my audio playback
problem did not return. Woo hoo!
