I was reading on toms hardware site someware that if you have a onboard
soundcard that you would have a 10 to 15% perfomance drop.Is that true on
the A7N8X and if it is would it be a good idea to disable the onboard sound
and use my soundblaster live?

The Deluxe has a lower CPU usage than Soundblaster cards. In fact in a test
(on Tomshardware, I think) it was the lowest of all tested.

I'm not sure about the Realtek 650 on the non-deluxe.

Ben

heck, I see an avg of 4% CPU usage in XP Pro task mngr just playing a
256Kbit MP3 in winamp2 on a non-dlx v2 w/Barton @ 3200+. (basically 0%
usage with no sound playing).

Been thinking of getting a sound card, decent/not too expensive one and
something noticeably better then the onboard ALC650. What to buy?

Cheers,
Ed

You may as well pick a soundblaster... Or you should have got the deluxe
:-)

Ben

I have a SB PCI 512 card here but not sure if it's even worth messing
with?

The dlx was just too expensive at the time for my tastes.
I think I am the only one in this group with a non-dlx. ;p

No you are not, I'm tight too.

I just didn't need anything the Dlx has and have bought too many boards
in the past with extras that I never used. I can live with the sound,
but if my SB PCI card is better I'll use it, only use 4 speakers anyway.
;p

Dunno if it'll be much better than the Realtek, best bet is to give it a go.

The way I see it is that it'll cost me more to by a SATA or RAID card,
Firewire card or whatever then the extra the motherboard cost. If there is
one thing I spend my money on it's the motherboard - I tend to make them
last.

Did a GHOST image, but now I dread the deed of having to uninstall the
realtek drivers, etc... then install the SB CD and then the card?, then
creative's SB Winxp updates.... ?

SATA and RAID will have to wait here, maybe on my dual Opteron 4000+ in
2005-2006? ;p
