Audio over video and still photography?

I am interviewing my grandmother and taping it for memories sake. We are
wanting to take still photos of her and add them to the video/movie while she
talks about them. Can I add the to the video without cutting out the audio?
I tried it, but apparently don't have a clue what I'm doing, because when it
gets to the photo. the is silence and the audio picks back up when the video
clips picks back up. Is this something I can do in Movie Maker?
 
yes, you can easily do it in Movie Maker.... put a 2nd copy of the video on
the audio/music track and mute the copy on the video track. That lets you
cut/trim/change the visual without effecting the audio.
