The answer is more complicated than the question.
There is a limit on how large the embedded WAV file can be within a PPT
file, but this is user selected up to a max of 50 megs. PowerPoint will
link to WAV files larger than the selected limit (at the time the wav is
inserted).
Other wise, PowerPoint links to *all other sound file formats*. When they
are called to play and start, PowerPoint does not monitor them any longer,
so they can run for hours.
