Hi. I have a ThinkPad T40 with Windows XP Pro. There is an internal CD-DVD
drive, and I use both Media Player and InterVideo WinDVD. Until recently the
sound has worked perfectly. Two days ago DVDs started playing in a
stop-and-go manner -- annoying, but better than not being able to view DVDs
at all. And then today the video is still stop-and-go, but the sound has
totally stopped functioning. I ran the sound troubleshooting wizard, and
none of the suggestions solved the problem. The sound controller is
SoundMAX. Can anyone tell me how I can get the audio working again? (It's
urgent that I do. I am an online college student, and my professors record
their lectures on DVD. Exams include material only in the lectures. So if I
can't hear the lectures, I'm in deep trouble.)

Probably reinstall soundmax software will work..However you could/can
go to run, type: DXDIAG Run the Direct X tests...

Unfortunately, reinstalling the SoundMAX software didn't resolve the problem.
The sound troubleshooting wizard made that suggestion, too, so I had tried
it before posting here. I thought since none of the software fixes worked,
it's probably an actual hardware malfunction. :-(
