Howdy,
I'm building a new pc and running into an issue w/ the audio driver.

It's a Dell Optiplex 745. The audio driver is an:

Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated HD Audio

It was taken directly from Dell's site and is the only audio driver avail.

Since downloading it, I get the following error message at each reboot:

"MAX4PNP has stopped working"

Other details are:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Timestamp: 4456324f

I can't seem to find any info online (yet), and the ADI tech support folk
suggested contacting Intel (makers of the motherboard).

Figured I'd give the MS community a shot to see if anyone here might have
some info.

FWIW, the audio appears to be working, but something w/in the app.is
crashing at startup.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

jimk,

I can tell you only that the smax4pnp.exe process puts an icon in the system
tray. This icon gives you quick access to some of the features of the
SoundMax software that was installed with your soundcard drivers, if that's
what you installed. I don't know what was installed on your computer.

According to your post, it is the smax4pnp.exe that crashed. I think there
is not support for that program in Vista. I'd delete it, or at least rename
it to something like smax4pnp.old until you determine what happens. Doing
this could resolve the problem your having. Post back on the results.

thanks. there didn't appear to be that icon/option down in the syst. tray. I
know what you are referring to, but clicking on the icon didn't bring up any
option other than to lower/raise the volume. Dbl clicking on the app in
Control panel brought no response. On another forum someone posted this link:

I uninstalled the driver from the Dell site and installed the one above.

It's working fine now, so that appeared to resolve the issue.

Thanks again for your help!

jmk,

Appears that the former item you uninstlled isn't compatible with Vista but
the latter you installed is compatible. At least you're good to go, and
that's what it's all about.
