when i go to audio settings, it tells me I have no audio playback device
installed on my machine. I have tested all my drivers, updated them and
reinstalled soundmax, but when i try and play a file, I get an error message
to say:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be
functioning properly"

This literally just started one day, I did not change anything on my
computer. It had happened once or twice before after system hybernation, but
after I rebooted, it fixed the problem. Now it does it all the time.

I have literally spend hours and hours fiddling with this and I am
desperate...

can anyone help?

Shutdown your PC. If your soundcard is removable, open the case and remove
the one screw and pull it out of the socket. Disconnect your speakers/mic
first. Reboot.
XP should come up with an error message that no soundcard is installed.
Shutdown your PC, insert your soundcard and insert the one screw. Reboot.
XP's plug*play feature should find the soundcard and install it or ask you
to insert
the installation disk. There may be better ways to do this, but usually
this way
works the best. :~)

I have this problem as well, a soundmaxDigital soundcard, built into my
IBM laptop. To unhook the soundcard would mean sending it back for
repairs, and I really don't want to do that. I can get sound out from
programs that let you select the sound device, but not from the ones
that only use the default.

This might be a solution, it was for me. It turns out that the Plug & Play
Software Enumerator was missing from Device Manager under System devices.
Here is a link to the fix that worked for me. Hope it helps:
