audio CD's not playing???

Up until this week, my Drive D CD-RW would play audio CD's - now it's not.
It plays regular data/program CD's just fine, but if I put a commercial music
CD into the tray, the computer will not recogize it. Is this a simple
settings problem, or is my drive failing?

Empty the CD-drive first, reboot, then insert CD of choice.

sigh. I wish it were that easy but alas - no go. My wife was playing an
Abba CD a week ago - maybe it quit in self-defence. Anyone else out there
with any ideas?

Check for 1) spyware and 2) other software competing for your CD drive's
attention.

1) I don't know if this is the case here, but rootkits installed by some
audio CDs will interfere (see for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Sony_CD_copy_protection_controversy)
2) OEM software from SoundBlaster or possibly some disc-burning utilities
may be causing a problem. Check your startup programs (possibly using
MSCONFIG) or even run in Safe Mode to see if you can eliminate this case, or
identify the culprit.

i have a problem with my cd writer.
When I put in a cd it doesn't react, even when I go to "my computer" the
pictogram of the cd writer is gone.

Thanks! It was the spyware and not the Abba. I owe you a beer if I ever
meet you.
Cheers!
